Eagles commence 2026 training camp with healthy roster and new offensive scheme

Résumé

Philadelphia held its first 2026 training-camp practice on Wednesday, noting a largely healthy roster, new jersey numbers and a revamped offense under coordinator Sean Mannion.

Philadelphia’s 2026 training camp opened on Wednesday with a 1-hour-17-minute practice at the Jefferson Health Training Complex. Outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard was placed on the active/PUP list after sustaining a pec strain in a pre-camp workout, but general manager Howie Roseman said the injury is not expected to be long-term. The remaining 89 players on the 90-man roster participated, including linebacker Jihaad Campbell, who returned from a shoulder injury.

The team announced new jersey numbers for several players, such as LB Jihaad Campbell (11) and OLB A.J. Epenesa (57). On offense, backup quarterback duties continued to be split between Tanner McKee and Andy Dalton, with fourth-string quarterback Cole Payton also receiving reps. Wide receivers DeVonta Smith, Makai Lemon, Dontayvion Wicks and Hollywood Brown logged the majority of first-team repetitions.

Defensive observations included safety Marcus Epps earning first-team reps, while veterans Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa worked with the second unit. Linebackers Zack Baun and Jihaad Campbell started, and cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Riq Woolen were on the field for the base defense.

The most notable change was the offensive approach under new coordinator Sean Mannion. The Eagles operated primarily from under center, employed extensive play-action and motion, and featured more dump-off passes to running backs, suggesting a shift away from the stagnant offense criticized in recent seasons. Saquon Barkley appeared to receive additional pass-catching opportunities.

Highlights included second-year receiver Darius Cooper making a contested catch in 7-on-7 drills, and DeVonta Smith securing a deep route reception as a primary receiver. Running back Tank Bigsby displayed aggressive running and a strong catch, while rookie quarterback Cole Payton delivered a deep pass to Quez Watkins during a developmental drill.

Coaches also noted areas for improvement, such as the inexperience of seventh-round pick Uar Bernard, who struggled with alignment and route concepts during the session.
