Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio updates on player progress at 2026 training camp

Summary

Vic Fangio discussed the conditioning and performance of several defensive players during his second press conference of the 2026 training camp, highlighting improvements and roster considerations.

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio spoke to reporters for the second time this week, offering updates on the conditioning and development of key defensive players. He said defensive end Jalen Hunt has maintained his weight while adding muscle, and that defensive tackle Nolan Smith returned to his target weight after a heavier off-season.

"Jalyx is weighing the same that he was last year. Nolan came back in the spring heavier and now he's back down to where he should be," Fangio said.

Fangio praised linebacker Jalen Carter for his strong camp performance, noting that being in good shape allows him to execute fundamentals more effectively. He also commented on defensive end Jordan Davis, explaining that improved conditioning has enhanced his pass-rushing ability and flexibility on the field.

"He's a much better pass rusher in the 330's than what he was. When you're in better shape, weighing less, that's easier to do and you can do it for a longer time," Fangio explained.

Safety Andrew Mukuba was described as more comfortable with the defensive scheme and mentally sharper than the previous year, while also being in slightly better shape.

"It's just experience, knowledge and know-how of the defense," Fangio said of Mukuba.

Fangio highlighted the versatility of Michael Carter, who is learning three defensive back positions and has shown steady progress. He also urged observers not to overlook linebacker Chance Campbell, citing his athleticism and the team's confidence in his abilities despite a history of injuries.

"Don't sleep on Chance now. He's a good football player," Fangio remarked.

Veteran linebacker Jeremiah Trotter received praise for his camp performance, with Fangio noting improvements in his movement, decision-making and overall play. The coach concluded the briefing by mentioning his personal habit of getting a mango-flavored water ice after practice.
