Treasury Department Considers Commemorative $1 Coin Featuring President Trump for 250th Anniversary
The U.S. Treasury Department is evaluating a $1 coin design featuring President Donald Trump to mark the nation's 250th anniversary, though legal concerns arise over depicting a living president.
The U.S. Treasury Department is evaluating a $1 commemorative coin design featuring President Donald Trump to mark the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026. The proposed design includes Trump's profile on the obverse and an image of him raising a fist on the reverse, reminiscent of his gesture following a 2024 campaign rally incident.
U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach confirmed the authenticity of the draft designs, stating, "No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America's 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real."
A Treasury spokesperson noted that while a final design has not been selected, the draft "reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles."
However, the initiative raises legal questions. Federal law prohibits the depiction of living individuals on U.S. currency, a tradition dating back to an 1866 Act of Congress aimed at avoiding the appearance of a monarchy.
The Treasury Department has not yet commented on the legality of the proposed coin design.
