U.S. Mint launches $1 coin featuring Donald Trump for nation’s 250th anniversary

Summary

The U.S. Mint began selling a commemorative $1 coin with President Donald Trump’s portrait on the obverse and the Great Seal on the reverse, marking the United States’ 250th birthday.

The U.S. Mint started selling a $1 commemorative coin on Wednesday to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. The obverse displays a portrait of President Donald Trump, while the reverse features the Great Seal of the United States. The design was approved earlier this year by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump.

The coin, struck in a gold-colored finish, bears the inscription “LIBERTY” above Trump’s image and the dates “1776 – 2026” below. The reverse shows the eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in a banner.

Each roll of 25 coins is priced at $61 and a bag of 100 costs $154.50. The Mint said some rolls and bags contain special-issue coins marked “July 4th,” reflecting the date of the Declaration of Independence. Purchasers are limited to two orders per household, a restriction that ends at 2 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.

"The coins were struck to honor 250 years of great American heritage," the Mint said on its website.

Legal experts note that federal law generally prohibits depicting a living president on U.S. currency, but the Treasury Secretary can authorize special issues such as this one.
