U.S. Mint releases commemorative $1 coin featuring Donald Trump for nation’s 250th anniversary

Summary

The U.S. Mint has issued a special-edition $1 coin bearing a portrait of President Donald Trump, marking the first time a living president appears on U.S. currency in a century.

The U.S. Mint launched a commemorative one-dollar coin on Wednesday that displays a portrait of President Donald Trump on the obverse and the inscription "In God we trust" on the reverse. The issue is intended to mark the United States' 250th anniversary.

According to the Mint, the coin is meant to capture "the spirit, pride, and legacy of a nation approaching its landmark anniversary" and is described as a "once-in-a-generation anniversary design destined to become a standout addition to modern collections." The coins, which are golden in colour but contain no gold, are composed of 88.5% copper with zinc, manganese and nickel.

Pricing is set at $61 for a roll of 25 coins and $154.50 for a bag of 100. Within hours of the launch, the Mint’s website indicated the items were out of stock. They are also available through vending machines at the Mint’s Washington, D.C., store.

Federal law prohibits the depiction of living persons on U.S. money, but the statute applies only to the reverse side of coins. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously noted plans for a $250 bill featuring Trump and mentioned that a living president had appeared on currency before, though a bill to allow such portraits on coins remains stalled in Congress.
