Summary

The U.S. Mint began selling a gold-finished $1 coin commemorating America’s 250th birthday that depicts President Donald Trump on the obverse and the Great Seal on the reverse.

The U.S. Mint announced Wednesday that a $1 gold-finished coin honoring the United States’ 250th anniversary is now for sale. The obverse shows President Donald Trump’s portrait, while the reverse displays the Great Seal of the United States with the eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

The design, approved earlier this year by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, was described by the Mint as a tribute to “250 years of great American heritage.” An arc above the portrait reads “LIBERTY,” and the dates “1776 – 2026” appear below. The Mint noted that some rolls and bags contain special-issue coins marked “July 4th,” indicating they were struck on Independence Day.

Each roll of 25 coins is priced at $61, and a bag of 100 costs $154.50. Purchasers are limited to two orders per household, and the Mint indicated that additional inventory is being produced as current stock is depleted.

"I am honored by it," President Trump said in earlier comments about the coin design.

Legal experts note that federal law generally prohibits the depiction of a living president on U.S. currency, though the Treasury Secretary can authorize special issues under certain conditions.
