The U.S. Treasury has unveiled a draft design for a $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump, intended to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026. The obverse side of the coin displays Trump's profile alongside the word "Liberty" and the dates "1776–2026." The reverse side portrays Trump with a raised fist before an American flag, accompanied by the phrase "FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT," referencing his statement after surviving an assassination attempt during his 2024 campaign.
U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach confirmed the authenticity of the design, stating, "No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real."
However, the design has sparked legal and political controversy. The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, signed by Trump in January 2021, prohibits the depiction of living individuals on the reverse side of specified coins, including the semiquincentennial series. Legal experts argue that the draft may not violate this restriction, as it avoids a traditional "head and shoulders" bust format.
Historical precedent exists; in 1926, President Calvin Coolidge appeared on a commemorative half-dollar while still in office. Since then, the Mint and the Treasury Department have strictly avoided featuring living subjects on currency.
A Treasury spokesperson commented, "This first draft reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles. We look forward to sharing more soon."
The final design for the $1 coin has not yet been selected, and the ongoing government shutdown may delay the decision.
