Treasury Releases Draft Design of $1 Coin Featuring President Trump for 2026 Commemoration

Summary

The U.S. Treasury has unveiled draft designs for a $1 commemorative coin featuring President Donald Trump, intended to mark the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026.

The U.S. Treasury Department has unveiled draft designs for a $1 commemorative coin featuring President Donald Trump, intended to mark the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026. The proposed coin's obverse displays a profile of President Trump, accompanied by the inscriptions "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and the years "1776" and "2026." The reverse side portrays an image reminiscent of President Trump raising his fist after an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, with the phrase "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT" and an American flag in the background.

U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach confirmed the authenticity of the designs, stating, "No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America's 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real. Looking forward to sharing more soon, once the obstructionist shutdown of the United States government is over."

The inclusion of a living president's image on U.S. currency raises legal questions. According to U.S. Code § 5112, "No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President."

A Treasury spokesperson noted that while the drafts are legitimate, a final design has not been selected. "While a final $1 dollar coin design has not yet been selected to commemorate the United States' semiquincentennial, this first draft reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles."

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on the designs, stating, "I'm not sure if he's seen it, but I'm sure he'll love it."

The Treasury Department continues to review the designs to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
