UK health agency says Ebola risk to Britain remains low amid DRC outbreak

The UK Health Security Agency said on 31 October that the risk of Ebola spreading to Britain remained low despite the Democratic Republic of Congo’s outbreak, noting the country’s strict protocols and the virus’s limited transmission characteristics. Earlier, Africa CDC director-general Dr. Jean Kaseya urged greater international aid, highlighting Canada’s contributions and the need for further assistance.

The Congolese Ministry of Health reported more than 10,000 infections and over 5,000 deaths, a near-50% fatality rate. Euronews reported that the Bundibugyo strain has also spread to Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria, raising concerns about regional transmission. DD India noted that health officials warned the outbreak could reach Europe.

Résumé

Four claims were partially confirmed: that confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo exceeded 10,000 as of October 31, 2026; that the Congolese Ministry of Health reported 5,026 deaths among 10,351 Ebola infections as of November 2, 2026; that the Democratic Republic of the Congo recorded over 10,000 Ebola cases as of November 4, 2026; and that the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola caused more than 5,300 deaths across the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries as of November 2, 2026. One claim, that the UK Health Security Agency assesses the risk of a wider Ebola outbreak in Britain as low due to strict protocols and the virus’s transmission characteristics, had not enough evidence to be verified.
