Washington Resident Dies from Avian Flu Linked to Dairy Cattle
Washington state health officials confirmed that a Yakima County resident died from avian influenza after exposure to infected dairy cattle on November 1, marking the first U. S. bird-flu death in a year.
The death follows earlier reports that a third local case of H5N1 infection, also linked to the dairy herd, remained mild and did not require hospitalization. Officials said the virus continues to circulate among cattle in the region, but they assess the overall risk to the public as low.
