UK health officials say risk of Ebola spreading to Britain remains low despite DRC outbreak

Résumé

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded over 10,000 Ebola cases, but the UK Health Security Agency assesses the risk of a wider outbreak in Britain as low, citing strict protocols and the virus’s transmission characteristics.

The Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus has surpassed 10,000 cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with more than 5,000 deaths reported by the end of October 2026. Cases have also been confirmed in Kenya, Nigeria and previously in Uganda, raising questions about the potential for the disease to reach the United Kingdom.

Health authorities note that while an infected individual could travel to Britain, the virus’s mode of transmission makes a large-scale epidemic unlikely. Ebola spreads only through direct contact with the bodily fluids of a symptomatic person, and individuals become infectious only after symptoms appear, unlike COVID-19, which can spread before illness is apparent.

"The UK Health Security Agency assesses the risk to the UK population as low," the agency said in its latest guidance.

The UK has established procedures for diagnosing, isolating and tracing contacts of suspected cases. The National Health Service maintains specialist centres and protocols for managing any imported infections, ensuring that a single case would be treated seriously without endangering the wider public.

Although no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain, ongoing research aims to develop effective options. Controlling the outbreak in affected regions remains critical to reducing the chance of international spread.

European health authorities have similarly rated the risk to their populations as very low, emphasizing that an infected traveller is unlikely to transmit the virus further. Continuous monitoring, rapid diagnosis and international cooperation are highlighted as essential to maintaining the current risk assessment.
