Runner dies after collapsing near finish of New York City Marathon
A 24-year-old runner, identified by her family as Rachel Apa, collapsed near the finish line of the New York City Marathon on 31 October and later died, with officials citing rhabdomyolysis as a possible cause. Earlier reports said the athlete was a first-time marathon participant and a former collegiate competitor.
Her father, Steve Apa, and emergency responders said she was treated on-site and then taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The New York Road Runners and medical teams highlighted the rarity of the condition in endurance events.
