Charleston Southern University Mourns Graduate Student Who Died After NYC Marathon Collapse

Charleston Southern University announced on November 5 that it mourns graduate student Rachel Apa, who died on November 1 from rhabdomyolysis after collapsing near the finish of the New York City Marathon, where she had been raising funds for Parkinson’s research. Apa, a 24-year-old MBA student and former collegiate athlete, collapsed at mile 24 of the marathon on October 31, according to her family and medical officials.

Emergency responders transported her to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead hours later. Officials identified rhabdomyolysis, a rare muscle-breakdown condition linked to extreme exertion, as the cause of death.
