BC officials investigate grizzly attack, impose curfew after mother and daughter killed
British Columbia conservation officers said a second body was recovered on 5 November, indicating that more than one grizzly bear may have been involved in the fatal attack that killed Jennifer Balcarras and her 20-year-old daughter Selah Reed near Bella Coola, and the Nuxalk Nation imposed an evening curfew as a safety measure. The curfew restricts outdoor activities after dark in the affected area.
The victims were identified as the 48-year-old mother and her daughter after officers discovered the mother's body on 1 November on the Snooka West Trail and continued a search for the missing daughter, who remained unlocated despite extensive efforts. Earlier reports had confirmed the identities and described the scene as a suspected grizzly bear incident.
