BC officials investigate grizzly attack killing mother and daughter, curfew imposed
Conservation officers in British Columbia are probing a suspected grizzly bear attack that killed mother Jennifer Balcarras and her 20-year-old daughter Selah Reed near Bella Coola, while the Nuxalk Nation imposed an evening curfew and stepped up safety measures on 5 November. The victims were discovered on 1 November on the Snooka West Trail, and officials later identified them as a 48-year-old mother and her adult daughter. A second body was recovered, prompting officers to consider that more than one grizzly may have been involved in the fatal incident.
Earlier reports described the initial discovery of the mother's body and the ongoing search for her daughter, followed by identification of both victims and confirmation that a grizzly bear was likely responsible. The investigation has since expanded to include the possibility of multiple bears and community safety actions.
