BC Conservatives win supermajority; former NDP MLA Kahlon discusses housing outlook
Former British Columbia NDP MLA Ravi Kahlon said on 28 October that he will devote his post-political work to housing policy after the snap provincial election that handed a supermajority to the BC Conservative Party. The election on 24 October saw the BC Conservatives win 48 % of the vote, securing a supermajority and ending nine years of NDP rule. Interim Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson announced he will form a government and, in a statement, outlined priorities that include a financial audit, a hospital-wait-time commission, tax relief and advancing the Pacific Link oil pipeline.
Doerkson also noted that the party must amend its constitution to confirm his premiership. The defeated NDP, reduced to 28 seats, faces the task of selecting an interim leader and rebuilding as the official opposition. President Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz posted reactions to the Conservative victory, and analysts said the new premier could deepen economic cooperation with Alberta.
