Quebec Premier alleges Ottawa blocked his role at Canada-EU summit

Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said the federal government blocked his participation in the Canada-EU summit in Montreal, denying him a speaking slot and a reception. The federal government said it had consulted the province on the matter.

Earlier, Prime Minister Mark Carney and former Liberal leader Stéphane Dion urged concrete results in trade, science, defence and digital cooperation at the summit. EU member states were divided over whether to grant Canada an “associate member” label, while EU officials said the partnership was moving toward an unprecedented associate status that could bring Canada closer to EU membership.
