Trump urges Zelenskyy to accept Russian peace deal amid rising tensions
President Donald Trump urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 20 October to accept a peace settlement offered by Russia, as diplomatic talks continued in Oslo and the United States imposed new restrictions on the Starshield communications system. Earlier, European officials questioned Trump’s stance toward Kyiv, suggesting a personal bias after his criticism of Zelenskyy for hindering peace. In early October, Trump said Ukraine needed new leadership while Zelenskyy reported improved intelligence sharing on Russian strikes.
The United States had also limited certain intelligence and technology support to Ukraine. In parallel, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a three-way summit with the United States and China, and Senator Marco Rubio warned that the conflict could spread to neighboring states.
