EU drops 'associate member' language from Canada-EU summit declaration
The European Union will no longer use the term “associate member” in the upcoming Canada-EU summit statement, opting for language that promises an ever closer association, CBC reported. Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said Ottawa denied him a speaking slot and a reception at the summit, while the federal government said it had consulted the province, CBC added. Earlier, EU officials had signaled plans to deepen ties with Canada, including a possible associate relationship, and Prime Minister Mark Carney and former Liberal leader Stéphane Dion emphasized the need for concrete results in trade, science, defence and digital cooperation at the Montreal summit, CBC noted.
