EU chief urges deeper Canada ties despite member objections
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated her call for a closer EU-Canada partnership, seeking associate-member-like ties, as the summit in Montreal proceeded despite objections from several member states, especially Germany. Earlier in the talks, EU diplomats had dropped the term “associate member” from the summit declaration after Germany and other countries raised concerns, replacing it with language promising an “ever closer association.” The shift followed months of debate over whether Canada should receive a status akin to EU associate membership, and after leaders such as former Canadian envoy Mark Carney and former Liberal Stéphane Dion urged concrete results in trade, science, defence and digital cooperation.
