CCP Expels Record 33 Members at Fifth Plenum in Beijing
The Chinese Communist Party expelled a record 33 members, including 16 senior military officials, at its fifth Central Committee plenum in Beijing, according to the BBC. Reuters reported that around 300 senior Party members gathered to tighten internal discipline and reinforce President Xi Jinping's authority ahead of the 2027 leadership transition. The Guardian noted that the meeting opened amid an ongoing anti-corruption drive.
BBC said the four-day session was set to adopt stricter governance measures before the 2025 Party Congress. NPR added that the session emphasized party self-governance and prepared for Xi's expected fourth term.
