China Expels Record 33 Party Members at Fifth Plenum
The Chinese Communist Party expelled a record 33 members, including 16 senior military officials, at its fifth Central Committee plenum in Beijing, leaving more than a quarter of the Committee’s seats vacant, the Guardian reported. The four-day meeting, which brought together around 300 Central Committee members, had been billed as a session to tighten internal discipline and advance anti-corruption efforts ahead of President Xi Jinping’s expected fourth term and the 2027 leadership transition, Reuters noted. During the same plenum, General Zhang Shengmin was elevated to the Politburo, marking the lowest delegate attendance since the Mao era, The Age reported.
