Packers running back Josh Jacobs charged with two misdemeanors, NFL investigation ongoing

Résumé

Josh Jacobs faces Class A misdemeanor charges for battery and property damage stemming from a May incident, while the NFL reviews the case and the Packers prepare for a possible suspension.

The Brown County (Wis.) District Attorney filed two Class A misdemeanor charges against Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs on Thursday, alleging battery and damage to property related to a May 23 domestic incident. Police reports indicate the dispute began when Jacobs' girlfriend, identified only as "ANM," accessed his phone and became upset, leading to a physical struggle in which Jacobs allegedly grabbed her arm, threw her to the ground, and damaged her phone. Surveillance footage from the residence corroborated portions of the girlfriend’s account, and an officer noted visible redness and a bump on her head.

Jacobs was initially arrested on five counts, including a felony charge of strangulation and suffocation, but the district attorney reduced the filing to the two misdemeanor offenses and stated the charges do not include domestic violence. Jacobs’ attorney said the matter will be addressed in court and not through the media.

The NFL has opened its own investigation and retains the authority to suspend Jacobs, though a decision has not yet been made. The league’s spokesperson, Brian McCarthy, said the case remains under review. Jacobs is scheduled for a preliminary court appearance on Nov. 17.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledged the possibility of a suspension, noting the team is preparing for that scenario while expressing confidence in the roster’s depth at running back. Backup Marshawn Lloyd, a 2024 third-round pick, has performed well in preseason, with Chris Brooks and Pierre Strong Jr. also available as options.
