NFL to interview Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs before deciding on discipline

Summary

The league will meet with Josh Jacobs as it reviews his case under the personal-conduct policy, while the Packers prepare backup MarShawn Lloyd to handle carries.

The NFL announced it will interview Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs before any disciplinary action is taken under the league’s personal-conduct policy. Jacobs has been on the Commissioner’s Exempt List since the end of training camp following his May arrest on multiple domestic-abuse charges, which were later reduced to two misdemeanors. The league said it is “closely monitoring all developments in the matter, which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.”

Jacobs’ initial court appearance was moved up to today, and the league expects a suspension, though the length has not been determined. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said, “I fully anticipate him being a member of our team. You’ve got to let everything play out.” The team’s backup, MarShawn Lloyd, is slated to assume the bulk of the rushing duties while Jacobs remains on the exempt list.

An NFL spokesperson confirmed the matter is still under review and that the league can act independently of the criminal case. If evidence, such as video footage, is released, the suspension could extend to most or all of the regular season. Jacobs will continue to be paid but is barred from practice and games until the commissioner decides to lift the exemption.
