Packers running back Josh Jacobs says he is remorseful and ready to return after suspension
Josh Jacobs, cleared to play after six games on the NFL's exempt list, expressed remorse for a May incident and said he is focused on moving forward with the Green Bay Packers.
Green Bay, Wis. – Running back Josh Jacobs, who missed the first six games of the season after being placed on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list, said Wednesday that he is remorseful for the incident that led to his arrest in May and is eager to rejoin the Packers on the field.
"I'm remorseful and sorry for putting this team in this situation," Jacobs said, noting that a split-second decision can change a life. He added that he is trying to learn from the mistake and focus on playing football.
Jacobs pleaded no contest to battery and criminal destruction of property, was convicted of battery, fined $1,000 and entered a deferred judgment agreement on the property charge. The league removed him from the exempt list on Monday, though its investigation into personal-conduct policy violations remains open. The six games he missed will count toward any future suspension, but he is cleared to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
"I think six games was a lot, honestly, but that's not really up to me to decide. I'm grateful to be playing, so I'm just happy to be back on the team," Jacobs said.
Coach Matt LaFleur said the team has supported Jacobs throughout the process and believes in second chances.
"I think people learn from their mistakes, and I do believe that he's extremely remorseful and a good person," LaFleur said.
Quarterback Jordan Love indicated the offense will give Jacobs as many touches as needed in his first game back.
"We'll give Josh as many touches as he needs, try to get him rolling," Love said.
The Packers have struggled without Jacobs, ranking last in the league in rushing yards per game. Jacobs, the team’s leading rusher in the past two seasons, is expected to practice Thursday before the Sunday matchup.
