Arizona Diamondbacks put second baseman Ketel Marte on restricted list

Summary

Ketel Marte was placed on the restricted list before the team's game at Fenway Park after failing to appear, prompting a roster adjustment and a recall from Triple-A.

The Arizona Diamondbacks moved second baseman Ketel Marte to the restricted list shortly before the start of their game in Boston, citing his failure to report to Fenway Park. Infielder Jose Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A Reno to fill the roster spot. The club has not issued a public statement regarding the decision.

According to reports from The Arizona Republic and MLB.com, Marte traveled with the team to Boston but did not arrive at the ballpark, despite expectations that he would serve as the designated hitter. Lars Nootbaar took over that role, batting at the bottom of the lineup.

Fernandez, who was on the taxi squad, entered the game at third base as part of a temporary infield arrangement that also included Ildemaro Vargas and Tim Tawa, while shortstop Geraldo Perdomo remained in the lineup. The move comes as first baseman Nolan Arenado, who is day-to-day with a torso injury, was unavailable.

The restricted list is used for players who are unavailable for non-injury reasons; players on the list are not paid and may remain there for any length of time. Marte, who is physically healthy, has not previously missed a game for injury reasons this season. His absence follows earlier reports of work-habit concerns and a brief stint on the restricted list after the 2025 All-Star break.

Arizona is one game behind a wild-card position, and Marte’s recent performance has been modest, with a .249/.314/.446 slash line and 21 home runs, the most on the team.
