Arizona places Ketel Marte on restricted list after missing game in Boston

Summary

Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was absent for the team's 11-1 loss to the Red Sox and was placed on the restricted list, while the club recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from Triple-A.

Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte did not appear at Fenway Park for the Diamondbacks' 11-1 defeat by the Boston Red Sox on Monday, prompting the team to place him on the restricted list. The club also recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from its Triple-A affiliate in Reno.

Manager Torey Lovullo said he was aware that Marte was dealing with a personal issue but was hopeful the player would arrive. "It's been a crazy day. All I know is he's dealing with a personal issue," Lovullo said. "He didn't show up today and he was put on the restricted list. That's as much as I know right now."

Marte, who is batting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs this season, has missed time with the Diamondbacks for a second consecutive year, previously leaving after the All-Star break to address a burglary at his home in the Dominican Republic.

The Red Sox' victory moved them to a 67-58 record, while Arizona sits third in the National League West with a 66-60 record and remains in contention for a wild-card spot.
