American Eagle's Stock Surges 25% Following Sydney Sweeney Ad Campaign
American Eagle Outfitters' stock rose 25% after the success of marketing campaigns featuring Sydney Sweeney and Travis Kelce, leading to increased customer engagement and sales.
American Eagle Outfitters reported a 25% increase in its stock price following the success of recent marketing campaigns featuring actress Sydney Sweeney and NFL player Travis Kelce. CEO Jay Schottenstein stated that the fall season began positively, attributing the uptick in customer awareness, engagement, and comparable sales to stronger product offerings and these marketing initiatives.
The campaign with Sweeney, titled "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans," played on the word "genes" and showcased the actress in American Eagle denim. The campaign generated significant attention, with some items selling out within a week. Chief Marketing Officer Craig Brommers noted that in just six weeks, the campaign led to unprecedented new customer acquisition.
Despite a 1% year-over-year decline in net revenue to $1.28 billion for the quarter ending August 2, the results exceeded analyst expectations. The company now anticipates low single-digit growth in quarterly comparable sales, outperforming previous forecasts.
The campaign also sparked political controversy, with some critics interpreting the "great genes" slogan as having eugenics connotations. President Donald Trump praised the ad, calling it "fantastic."
American Eagle plans to build on this momentum, with Brommers indicating that the campaign will continue with new elements introduced later this year.
