Canada bans Russian and Belarusian players from World Junior tournament
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on 3 November that athletes from Russia and Belarus will be denied entry to the 2026-27 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Alberta, effectively barring the two nations from the tournament. The decision follows Canada’s earlier criticism of the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling that reinstated Russia for international ice-hockey events, which Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Sport Minister Adam van Koeverden called unwelcome. European federations, including the Finnish Ice Hockey Association and the Swedish and Norwegian ice-hockey bodies, have also declared boycotts of Russian teams while the war in Ukraine continues.
