Albanese Faces Diplomatic Challenge Over Putin Photo at G20 Summit
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced a diplomatic dilemma over the possibility of a photo opportunity with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 Leaders' Summit held in Miami. This issue emerged amid ongoing tensions surrounding Russia's participation in the G20, particularly due to the war in Ukraine. Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov attended the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta despite opposition from U. S. lawmakers and European countries.
The meeting saw deep divisions over conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, which hindered consensus. European members refused to pose for a group photo with Lavrov, leading the United States to cancel the traditional photo session. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas criticized Lavrov for spreading falsehoods about Ukraine and warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin's attendance at the December G20 summit could legitimize Russian war crimes, urging stronger sanctions. These developments set the stage for Albanese's diplomatic challenge at the upcoming leaders' summit, highlighting the complexities of engaging with Russia amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
