EU's Kaja Kallas warns Putin's G20 attendance could legitimize war crimes
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned on 31 October that Russian President Vladimir Putin's possible attendance at the December G20 summit could legitimize Russia's war crimes in Ukraine and urged the United States and allies to impose tougher sanctions. The comment came after a G20 foreign ministers meeting in Atlanta on 30 October, where Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov attended despite U. S.
lawmakers' calls to bar him. European ministers objected to Lavrov's presence, refusing to pose for a group photograph, which the United States subsequently removed from the agenda. At the same meeting, Kallas accused Lavrov of spreading false narratives about Ukraine, and the photo op was cancelled after Australia, the United Kingdom, the European Union and other countries said they would not stand alongside Russia.
