Israeli election deadlock deepens as opposition leads, coalition uncertain
Preliminary counts indicated that the opposition bloc held about 67 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition secured roughly 53, making the composition of the next government unclear. Earlier exit polls had projected the Democrats, led by Yair Golan, to win nine to ten seats, and Democratic Party lawmakers subsequently called for a coalition with the Arab Ra'am party. Arab parties, meanwhile, secured a record 18-19 seats, a development that Balad party head Sami Abu Shehadeh denounced as racist for being excluded from coalition talks, further complicating Netanyahu's path to a majority.
