Record October Tides Flood Bay Area Roads, Prompt El Niño Flood Warnings
The National Weather Service said that unusually high tides on 23 October flooded roads in the San Francisco Bay Area and warned of further flooding as El Niño storms approach. Earlier in the week, the agency issued flood warnings and advisories for San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties, prompting local officials to deploy sandbags and reinforce sand berms.
Unusually warm Pacific waters linked to a strong El Niño raised sea levels to historic heights, flooding streets and businesses along the Southern California coast, including an 8-foot-2-inch king tide in Los Angeles Harbor that inundated homes and the Pacific Coast Highway. The flooding forced closures of sections of Highway 1 and disrupted Metrolink commuter service in southern Orange County.
