Record king tide floods homes and Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California
CBS News reported that on 18 October an 8-foot-2-inch king tide set a new record in Los Angeles Harbor, flooding residences, streets and a segment of the Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California. The surge also forced the closure of the highway segment and suspended Metrolink commuter service in the affected area.
Earlier in the week, the National Weather Service had issued flood warnings and advisories for San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles and other coastal counties, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Guardian noted that the warnings prompted sandbagging in the same counties, while the Los Angeles Times linked the unusually high sea levels to warm Pacific waters driven by a strong El Niño.
