Former OpenAI Engineer Charged Over Spy Device and Saudi Contacts
On 20 October, federal prosecutors charged former OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan with installing a hidden audio recorder in an executive conference room at the company's San Francisco office, communicating with a Saudi royal, and preparing to travel to Riyadh, the Justice Department said. The arrest was first announced on 9 October after a covert device was discovered in the conference room, according to the Justice Department. U. S. authorities later identified Alfozan, a Saudi national who led engineering projects at OpenAI, as the individual who placed the recorder.
The FBI charged him and he appeared in federal court in California. Federal prosecutors allege he used a ChatGPT account linked to his wife to design the device, leading to a wiretap charge. The case has reignited debate in Washington about the security risks of relying on foreign talent in the U. S. tech sector, and AI firms have tightened internal safeguards amid espionage concerns.
