Congress condemns Trump’s suspension of Russia sanctions over diesel deal
President Donald Trump signed an order on October sixteenth halting a newly passed sanctions package against Russia, a step denounced on October seventeenth by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several U. S. senators, NPR reported.
Earlier, NBC News said the executive order suspended sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas buyers, prompting criticism from Zelenskyy and members of Congress. The Guardian had reported that Trump delayed implementation of the bipartisan sanctions, citing national interest amid rising tensions with Ukraine. Newsweek noted that Zelenskyy warned the diesel agreement could open the door to additional energy contracts and further sanctions relief, while a Kremlin envoy described the deal as a model for expanded cooperation.
