Trump lifts Russian diesel restrictions despite bipartisan criticism
President Donald Trump on 18 October signed an order temporarily lifting the ban on Russian diesel imports, arguing it would help lower consumer fuel prices, as several Republican and Democratic senators and representatives called for the move to be reversed. The waiver followed an executive order on 16 October that paused the implementation of a bipartisan sanctions package targeting Russia's oil and gas sector.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the step, warning it could open the door to additional energy contracts with Moscow, while Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev described the deal as a model for expanded cooperation. Senators and House members from both parties also criticized the measure, saying it undermines pressure on Moscow.
