South African police said gunmen opened fire on a bar in Johannesburg and a barbecue venue near Cape Town, killing 27 people, with no arrests made and motives still unclear. The attacks were part of a series of tavern shootings that have shocked the nation. Earlier police investigations revealed that gunmen had killed 17 people in Gauteng and 10 in the Western Cape in separate tavern attacks, prompting manhunts and raising concerns over illegal firearms and organized crime.
