Pope Leo XIV Discharged After Lung Cancer Surgery, Set to Resume Duties
The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV will be discharged after four days of hospitalization following surgery to remove a portion of his right lung, and that he is expected to resume public duties soon. Earlier, the Vatican confirmed the pope had undergone a lobectomy after a lung nodule was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. He began post-operative recovery by celebrating Mass from his room at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and meeting senior clergy and world leaders.
President Donald Trump also sent his well wishes after the diagnosis. The surgery was first scheduled earlier in the week after the pontiff announced the need to remove an early-stage lung nodule detected during routine checks; Vatican officials said the operation would require about a week of recovery.
