Apple launches iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone

Résumé

Apple introduced the iPhone Duo, a passport-sized foldable device that combines iPhone design elements with a 180-degree hinge, pricing it from $1,999 and beginning pre-orders on Oct. 16.

Apple unveiled its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, at the Surprise and Shine event in Cupertino. The device folds 180 degrees, features a metal frame, glass front and back, and runs iOS 27 with a user interface adapted for the dual-screen format.

The Duo measures roughly 5.4 inches on the outer display and 7.6 inches on the inner panel, both sharing the same aspect ratio to allow seamless app transitions. The inner screen incorporates a ten-layer construction, including a titanium plate and a nano-etched texture that reduces glare. Apple says the phone meets IP68 dust- and water-resistance standards, a rating that exceeds Samsung’s current foldable lineup.

"The hinge feels solid, with spring mechanisms and magnets that hold the halves together without being overly stiff," noted a reviewer who tested the device at the launch event.

Apple’s implementation of Touch ID replaces Face ID on the Duo, and the device supports the Apple Pencil via USB-C. Software changes shift many controls to the right edge of the screen for thumb access, and multitasking allows up to two side-by-side apps in landscape mode, with picture-in-picture support for video apps.

Pricing starts at $1,999 for a 256 GB model, with higher-capacity variants reaching $3,199. The phone will be available in white and deep blue, with pre-orders opening on Oct. 16 and sales beginning Oct. 23.
