Apple iPhone Duo's matte nano-texture layer prevents crease visibility, but removal ruins display
A video shows that stripping the iPhone Duo's nano-texture coating turns its foldable screen glossy and uneven, while Apple offers replacement films for a fee.
Apple’s iPhone Duo uses a matte nano-texture layer on the inner display to reduce reflections and conceal the fold crease, giving the screen a paper-like appearance. The coating also slightly dulls color vibrancy and black depth compared with glossy foldable screens such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8.
A video posted on X by user @UniverseIce demonstrates the effect of removing the nano-texture film. After the layer is peeled off, the display appears glossy, wrinkled and uneven, which the uploader describes as the opposite of a desirable foldable experience.
Apple has announced that nano-texture replacement films can be obtained for $19 by customers with AppleCare+. The company advises against attempting to remove the coating, noting that doing so can damage the device.
The iPhone Duo launched on October 23 after pre-orders began on October 16 and sold out quickly. Delivery estimates have shifted from October to late January 2027, with the current U.S. estimate listed as January 25. Apple said the pre-order demand has been “extraordinary” and that it is working to make the product available to customers while offering demo units in Apple Stores.
"The pre-order demand for iPhone Duo, our first foldable iPhone, has been nothing short of extraordinary," Apple said in a statement.
"We are working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible," the company added.
Potential buyers are cautioned that supply may be limited at launch and that the replacement film is the recommended method for addressing any coating issues.
