TSA PreCheck expands to allow non-ticketed travelers through security at select California airports

Resumen

The Transportation Security Administration has launched a Gateside program at Los Angeles and San Diego airports, permitting eligible PreCheck members and Known Traveler Number holders to clear security without a boarding pass.

The Transportation Security Administration rolled out a new "Gateside by TSA PreCheck" service at 13 airports nationwide, including Los Angeles International Airport and San Diego International Airport. The program lets current and former PreCheck members and travelers with a Known Traveler Number pass through security without a flight reservation, enabling them to meet friends, pick up items, or accompany loved ones to the gate.

Applicants must submit a request one to three days before their intended visit. Membership in TSA PreCheck costs between $76 and $85 for a five-year period, and the agency reports that about 99% of passengers experience wait times under ten minutes.

Similar visitor programs already operate at more than 20 U.S. airports, such as Seattle’s Visitor Pass Program, which permits up to 300 non-ticketed individuals through security each day using the standard screening line. Internationally, countries like Australia have long allowed non-passengers to accompany travelers to boarding areas on domestic flights.

The TSA said the Gateside service is intended to restore the ability for travelers to say goodbye or welcome others at the gate and to enjoy airport amenities. The agency plans to expand the program to additional locations in the coming months.
