Patriots hold first training-camp practice, spotlight on Kayshon Boutte and other players
New England’s first camp session featured a 40-yard reception by rookie receiver Kayshon Boutte, modest work from backup quarterback Tommy DeVito, and contributions from several newcomers.
The New England Patriots began their summer training camp with a 90-minute practice behind Gillette Stadium on Saturday. Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte drew attention after quarterback Drake Maye connected on a deep go route for roughly 40 yards, a play the quarterback described as consistent with Boutte’s performance over the past two seasons.
Backup quarterback Tommy DeVito saw limited action, completing none of three attempts and avoiding turnovers. Fourth-year receiver DeMario Douglas continued his involvement, catching two passes from Maye and working as a slot option alongside recent acquisitions A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs.
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez made a single defensive snap, providing tight man coverage that forced an incomplete pass. Safety S. Brown participated in nickel packages as the third safety, indicating a potential role beyond special teams, though he was beaten on a play by Douglas.
The team will hold a second practice on Sunday, with gates opening at 9:15 p.m. ET and the session starting an hour later.
