Patriots highlight deep receivers and pass rush in Tuesday practice

Summary

New England Patriots' ninth training-camp practice featured strong performances from receivers Kayshon Boutte, A.J. Brown and Mack Hollins, as well as a productive showing from the defensive line duo Dre’Mont Jones and Elijah Ponder.

The New England Patriots held their ninth training-camp practice on Tuesday, the first with fans in attendance since the previous day. Quarterbacks Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito each targeted the team’s top receivers, with Kayshon Boutte catching five passes, the most in the session, while A.J. Brown and Mack Hollins each recorded four receptions.

Boutte’s catches came primarily against the second-string defense, and he was involved in both of Maye’s two-minute drill scenarios. Hollins highlighted the day with a deep sideline pass from DeVito that would have resulted in a 40-yard touchdown in a game setting. Brown, who recovered from a thumb injury, caught all four of his targets, including three slants from Maye.

Running back Terrell Jennings, returning from the non-football injury list, contributed a 15-yard run and participated in the top punt team, moving ahead of Lan Larison in the rotation. On the defensive side, edge rushers Dre’Mont Jones and Elijah Ponder each recorded pressures, with Jones registering two potential sacks and Ponder breaking up a pass intended for Hunter Henry.

Cornerback Channing Canada struggled in coverage, allowing receptions to Hollins and Boutte, while fellow cornerback Kobee Minor, despite giving up several catches, broke up a pass to Behren Morton and forced an incompletion on a later route. Kicker Andy Borregales was perfect on seven field-goal attempts, including two long kicks in two-minute situations.

Linebackers Chad Muma and Khalil Jacobs also saw notable reps, with Muma positioned as the third off-ball linebacker and Jacobs appearing to move ahead of veteran K.J. Britt for a backup role. Defensive tackle Joshua Farmer had a particularly impactful practice.

The team’s tenth practice, scheduled for Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. ET, is expected to be a walkthrough.
