49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to miss full duties after July car crash

Resumen

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained a broken nose, broken ribs, a hand injury, facial stitches and a concussion in a July 14 collision and will participate in training camp on a limited basis.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was injured in a July 14 automobile collision near his northern California home. He suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a hand injury, more than 40 facial stitches and a severe concussion, according to sources familiar with his condition. Paramedics transported Shanahan to a local hospital, where he remained for most of the day before being released. The other driver, who was not injured, cooperated with police and no citations were issued. Palo Alto police lieutenant Nicholas Martinez said drugs and alcohol were not involved and that the department does not release details about fault.

Shanahan has been recovering at home and is expected to be cleared for full activities only after concussion symptoms resolve. Training camp begins Sunday, and the 49ers announced that assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will assume some of Shanahan’s responsibilities during his limited participation. General manager John Lynch is set to hold a news conference on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.

The team issued a statement confirming the accident, noting that Shanahan’s injuries are non-life-threatening and expressing gratitude to first responders. Shanahan enters his tenth season in San Francisco, which would tie him with Bill Walsh for the longest coaching tenure in franchise history.
