49ers coach Kyle Shanahan admits fault in recent car crash
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he was responsible for a collision that injured him, contradicting a state database that had listed the other driver at fault.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters he was to blame for a recent automobile collision that left him with a broken nose, multiple rib fractures, a broken hand and a severe concussion. Shanahan said he was reaching for a cell phone that had fallen between the seats, which caused him to look away from the road and led to the crash.
The California Crash Reporting System had initially recorded the incident as not the coach's fault, attributing the accident to a 21-year-old female driver who allegedly made an unsafe turn. The database, which does not list driver names, also indicated that neither party was cited for impairment and that both drivers were wearing seat belts when airbags deployed.
"I was reaching for my phone and took my eyes off the road," Shanahan said.
Shanahan, 46, has not yet participated in training camp but is expected to be cleared to coach the team in its opening game in Australia. He enters his tenth season with the 49ers, having compiled an 82-67 record and appeared in two Super Bowls, though a championship has so far eluded him.
