49ers coach Kyle Shanahan appears at training camp after car crash

Summary

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan attended part of the team's first training-camp practice despite sustaining multiple injuries in a July car accident, and will remain on limited duties while recovering.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan was on the field for about half an hour during the 49ers' first training-camp practice on Sunday, standing beside general manager John Lynch, according to a report from The Athletic. He was briefly greeted by players including Kyle Juszczyk, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.

The team announced on Saturday that Shanahan suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a car crash near his home on July 14, when his vehicle collided with an SUV. Medical reports said he sustained a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, more than 40 stitches to his face and a concussion.

"He will be placed in concussion protocol and must be cleared before resuming full coaching duties," Lynch said, adding the team does not expect the situation to affect Shanahan's ability to coach in the first week of the regular season.

While Shanahan recovers, longtime assistant Chris Foerster, 64, is serving as acting head coach. Foerster is entering his eighth season on the 49ers staff, having served as assistant head coach and offensive line coach since last year.
