US Waives $11 Million Fine for Southwest Airlines After 2022 Holiday Disruptions
The U.S. Department of Transportation has waived an $11 million fine for Southwest Airlines, acknowledging the airline's $1 billion investment in operational improvements following the December 2022 travel disruptions.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has waived an $11 million fine previously imposed on Southwest Airlines, as part of a broader $140 million settlement addressing the airline's operational failures during the December 2022 holiday season. This decision follows Southwest's commitment to invest over $1 billion in enhancing its operations to prevent future disruptions.
In December 2023, Southwest agreed to a settlement that included a $35 million cash fine and the provision of $90 million in travel vouchers to passengers who experienced significant delays or cancellations due to the airline's issues. The USDOT cited Southwest's substantial investment in operational improvements as a key factor in its decision to waive the remaining $11 million fine, which was originally due by the end of January.
The December 2022 disruptions led to the cancellation of nearly 17,000 flights, affecting over 2 million passengers. In response, Southwest has implemented measures such as upgrading its crew scheduling technology and increasing de-icing equipment to enhance performance and reliability.
