Cracker Barrel Reverts Logo Amid Customer Backlash and Sales Decline
Cracker Barrel's recent logo change led to significant customer backlash and a notable drop in sales, prompting the company to revert to its original branding.
Cracker Barrel Old Country Store faced significant customer backlash following its recent rebranding efforts, leading to a notable decline in sales and a swift reversal of the changes. The company had introduced a new logo and modernized restaurant decor, aiming to attract a younger demographic. However, these changes were met with immediate criticism from loyal patrons who felt the updates strayed from the brand's traditional image.
During a recent conference call with investors, Cracker Barrel reported an 8% drop in restaurant traffic over the past month and projected a continued decline of 7% to 8% in the first quarter of 2026. The company's stock price also suffered, dipping by 9% in after-hours trading following the announcement. In the month since the rebrand was announced, the stock is down more than 21%.
CEO Julie Felss Masino acknowledged the misstep, stating, "What cannot be captured in data is how much our guests see themselves and their own story in the Cracker Barrel experience, which is what's led to such a strong response to these changes." In response to the backlash, the company has halted ongoing remodels at dozens of locations and plans to revert the four restaurants that had completed renovations back to their original decor.
To regain customer trust and boost traffic, Cracker Barrel is expanding its loyalty program, allowing patrons to offer direct feedback after each visit. Masino expressed optimism about the future, saying, "We're moving ahead with a strong plan to regain traffic and the momentum we had a month ago. There is a lot to be optimistic about."
