ICE releases detained Wisconsin State Patrol trooper pending monitoring
U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released Wisconsin State Patrol trooper Carel Aaron Van Der Merwe on 7 November, after holding him at Madison’s Dane County Regional Airport since 5 November.
He will remain under electronic monitoring while his asylum case continues. Van Der Merwe, who entered the United States as a child and is listed on his father’s asylum application, was taken into custody by ICE at the airport and placed in a detention facility in Juneau, Wisconsin. Immigration officials determined he had overstayed his admission, leading to his brief confinement pending removal proceedings.
